Why Calm Dogs Get More Freedom

By George Walker, Walker’s K9 Services – Tucson, AZ

One of the fastest ways to improve your dog’s behavior is to stop rewarding excitement and start rewarding calm. Dogs quickly learn what works for them, and overly excited behavior often brings exactly what they want—attention, movement, or access to people and dogs.

Calm dogs earn freedom. A dog that can sit quietly, walk without pulling, and wait patiently at doors is a dog that gets more opportunities, not fewer. This doesn’t happen by accident. It’s built by consistently interrupting frantic behavior and reinforcing calm choices.

Instead of letting your dog explode out of the door, require a sit and eye contact. Instead of rushing greetings, slow them down. Calm behavior should always be the fastest path to what your dog wants.

Training isn’t about suppressing personality—it’s about teaching self-control. When dogs learn to regulate themselves, the entire relationship becomes easier and more enjoyable.
