Why Teaching a “Place” Command Changes Everything

By George Walker, Walker’s K9 Services – Tucson, AZ

One of the most powerful yet overlooked training tools is the place command. Teaching a dog to go to a specific spot and stay there builds impulse control, calm behavior, and clear communication — all without physical restraint.

The place command gives your dog a job. Instead of pacing, barking, jumping, or following you from room to room, your dog learns how to settle with purpose. This is especially helpful for high-energy or anxious dogs that struggle to relax on their own.

Place training also creates structure in everyday situations. Doorways, guests arriving, meal prep, and family activity can all trigger excitement or bad behavior. Sending your dog to place removes confusion and teaches them how to be calm around stimulation.

Consistency is key. Place isn’t just about staying on a bed or platform — it’s about maintaining position until released. Over time, this builds patience, confidence, and reliability that carries over into other areas of training.

A well-trained place command helps dogs learn how to turn off. Calm dogs make better decisions, listen more clearly, and live more peacefully with their families.
