Why Ignoring Bad Behavior Doesn’t Fix It

By George Walker, Walker’s K9 Services – Tucson, AZ

A common piece of advice dog owners hear is to “just ignore” unwanted behavior. While ignoring can be useful in very specific situations, it often fails when used as the primary training strategy.

When a dog pulls on the leash, ignores commands, or pushes boundaries and nothing changes, the dog learns that the behavior is acceptable. Dogs repeat what works. If bad behavior isn’t addressed, it becomes habit.

Effective training means giving dogs clear feedback. That includes rewarding good choices and correcting poor ones in the moment they happen. Calm, well-timed corrections provide information, not punishment.

Dogs don’t need confusion—they need clarity. Addressing behavior instead of avoiding it creates faster learning and more reliable results.
