Nia’s Story

Written by George Walker - Walkers K9 Services

Nine months ago, I met a little dog who would completely steal my heart.

Nia was found abandoned, severely underweight, and suffering from a badly broken leg.

She was in rough shape and desperately needed veterinary care, so I took her to PACC.

Because of the severity of her injuries, she required far more medical attention than I could

provide on my own.

I adopted her that same day!

The wonderful veterinary team at PACC initially believed they might have to amputate her leg.

The damage to the bone was extensive, and there was concern that it simply could not be

repaired. Fortunately, after evaluating her condition, they decided to attempt a surgical repair.

Through a combination of screws, pins, and a lot of skill, they were able to piece the bone

back together and save her leg.

I brought her home the day after surgery.

For the next two weeks, she hobbled around the house and yard wearing her “cone of shame.

” Despite everything she had been through, she never complained. She simply did the best she

could, one step at a time.

Physically, she was recovering. Emotionally, she was terrified.

Nia was scared of absolutely everything. If she heard people talking outside, she would come

flying back into the house, run to her crate, and sit there trembling. Every new sound, every

unfamiliar person, every unexpected movement seemed frightening to her.

When I first brought her to PACC, she weighed only 38 pounds. She was skin and bones.

Today, she weighs 52 pounds and is right where she should be. She has transformed from a

frightened,

undernourished little dog into a healthy, strong, and beautiful companion.

Just three weeks after her leg surgery, she had to return to PACC for another major

procedure—being spayed.

This poor little girl endured two significant surgeries in less than a month.

Most dogs would have every reason to be fearful of people after experiences like that.

But Nia had other plans.

Over the next several months, she slowly began to gain confidence. Little by little, she learned

that she was safe.

She learned that she didn’t have to be afraid anymore.

One of the biggest influences in her recovery was my German Shepherd, Jeff.

Jeff outweighed Nia by nearly 90 pounds, but that never seemed to matter to her. She

absolutely adored him, and despite the size difference, she gave him a run for his money.

The two of them became close companions.

Then tragedy struck again.

A few weeks ago, Jeff began having seizures. After veterinary evaluation, he was

diagnosed with brain tumors.

We tried anti-seizure medication, hoping for more time, but unfortunately the

medication did not help. The kindest

decision we could make was to let him go.

Nia mourned him deeply.

For about a week, she constantly searched the house and yard looking for him.

She would walk from room to room,

checking all of his favorite spots. Eventually she would climb onto her bed and cry.

Watching her grieve was heartbreaking.

For a dog who has endured abandonment, injury, surgeries, fear, and loss, Nia remains

one of the happiest dogs I have

ever known.

I have always been a die-hard German Shepherd fan, so I will admit it took me a

little while to adjust to this funny little mixed-breed dog. But every single day she

melts my heart and makes me laugh. Today, she proudly guards the house and yard, barking at anyone who comes too

close. Of course,

if one of those people actually stomped their foot at her, she’d probably run away like a little chicken. But she takes her job very seriously.

What amazes me most is her spirit.

Here is a dog who was abandoned, injured, frightened, and forced to endure more hardship in her short life than many dogs ever experience. Yet she remains loving, trusting, playful, and optimistic.

Dogs like Nia remind us of something important.

No matter what life has done to them, many dogs continue to love with their whole heart. They don’t dwell on the past. They don’t hold grudges. They simply keep moving forward.

Nia’s story is one of resilience, forgiveness, and hope. And every day, she reminds me just how remarkable dogs truly are.
