Are French Bulldogs the Right Breed for You?
By George Walker — Walker’s K9 Services, Tucson AZ
French Bulldogs — “Frenchies”—have exploded in popularity over the last decade, and for good reason. They’re comical, affectionate, and built like walking cartoons. But behind the big personality is a breed that isn’t the right fit for every home. Before you fall for the cute snorts and bat ears, it’s important to understand what living with a Frenchie really means.
As always, my goal is to help you make educated decisions, so you end up with a dog that fits your lifestyle—not a headache you didn’t sign up for.
The Pros: Why Frenchies Win Hearts Easily
1. Incredible Companionship
French Bulldogs are people-oriented to their core. They thrive being near their humans, lounging
on the couch, or tagging along on errands. They’re typically affectionate, humorous, and great
at bonding with everyone in the home.
2. Low Exercise Needs
If you’re looking for a marathon running partner, look elsewhere. But if you’re looking for a compact
couch buddy who’s happy with short walks and playtime, Frenchies check that box. Their exercise
requirements are modest, making them suitable for apartments or low-activity households.
3. Generally Good with Families
A well-bred and well-trained Frenchie is typically patient, gentle, and adaptable. They can do
well with kids, guests, and other pets—so long as boundaries and training exist.
4. Fun, Comical Personalities
Frenchies are natural clowns. They make people laugh with their expressions, snorts, and
stubborn antics. They add a lot of joy to a household when their needs are met.
The Cons: What Prospective Owners Must Understand
1. High Veterinary Costs
This is the biggest deal-breaker for many families.
French Bulldogs commonly face:
breathing issues (BOAS)
skin allergies
ear infections
spinal problems
eye issues
reproductive complications
These aren’t “rare possibilities”—they are extremely common breed realities. If you’re not financially prepared for ongoing vet bills, a Frenchie may not be the right choice.
2. Heat Intolerance
French Bulldogs cannot regulate heat well due to their flat faces.
This means:
No long hikes in summer
No time outside in hot weather
Close supervision even on mild days
In hot climates like Arizona, this becomes a genuine safety concern.
3. Stubbornness Without Structure
Frenchies are smart—but they’re also stubborn.
They absolutely require:
clear rules
consistent training
crate routines
boundaries around food, furniture, and people
Without structure, you’ll see barking, marking, reactivity, and pushy behavior.
4. Not Ideal for Active, Outdoor-Heavy Households
French Bulldogs can’t keep up with hikers, runners, or families constantly on the go. They simply don’t have the respiratory system for heavy activity.
5. Grooming and Cleaning Needs
Whether it’s cleaning facial folds, managing shedding, or dealing with chronic allergies, Frenchies require regular hands-on care.
Who a French Bulldog Is Right For
A Frenchie may be perfect if you:
✔ want a companion dog that stays near you
✔ enjoy a calm, indoor-centered lifestyle
✔ can afford higher vet expenses
✔ are committed to training and structure
✔ want a small dog with a big personality
✔ live in a home where someone is around often
Who Should Avoid Getting a Frenchie
A Frenchie is probably not a great match if you:
live a very active, outdoor-heavy lifestyle
live in a hot climate and expect long walks or hikes
want a “low-maintenance” dog
aren’t prepared for possible breathing or allergy issues
don’t plan on solid training routines
want a dog that can be left alone long hours
Final Thoughts
French Bulldogs are wonderful companions for the right family—but they are not an easy, cheap, or low-maintenance breed. They need structure, training, careful health management, and an owner who understands that owning a Frenchie is a commitment, not a trend.
If you’re prepared for their needs and limitations, you’ll gain one of the funniest, most loyal, and most lovable dogs you’ll ever meet.
