Training Your Dog Is as Much About You as It Is About Them

By George Walker, Walker’s K9 Services – Tucson, AZ

Many dog owners focus entirely on what their dog is doing wrong, but successful training often starts with the human end of the leash. Dogs respond best to clear, fair, and consistent guidance. When owners change their approach, dogs usually change with them.

Tone, timing, and body language matter. Dogs are experts at reading subtle cues, and mixed signals can slow progress. Calm, confident communication helps your dog understand what you’re asking and reduces confusion and frustration on both sides.

Consistency across the household is also critical. When rules differ from person to person, dogs struggle to understand expectations. Agreeing on commands, boundaries, and follow-through creates clarity and speeds up learning.

Training isn’t about perfection — it’s about progress. Mistakes will happen, and that’s okay. What matters most is staying patient, consistent, and committed to the process.

When owners learn alongside their dogs, training becomes more effective, more enjoyable, and far more rewarding.
