Don’t Repeat Commands
By George Walker, Walker’s K9 Services – Tucson, AZ
If you find yourself saying “sit… sit… SIT,” your dog isn’t being stubborn—they’re being trained to wait you out. Repeating commands teaches dogs that the first (and second) cue doesn’t matter.
Give the command once, clearly. Then pause. If your dog doesn’t respond, calmly guide them into the position or reset and try again. Consistency is key—when dogs learn that commands are only given once, their response time and reliability improve dramatically.
Clear communication builds respect. Repetition builds confusion.
